History

The beginnings of geosciences as independent disciplines in Tuebingen go back to 1837. In that year Friedrich August Quenstedt was appointed as professor for mineralogy and geognosticy.
The Department of Geography was founded in 1899 as a part of the Faculty of Philosophy. The Department's focus was on human geography. Some years later, the Department of Geology, Palaeontology and Mineralogy was founded as a part of the Faculty of Natural Sciences. Early in the twentieth century, the Department of Mineralogy became independent, and a section of diluvial prehistory was established within the Institute of Geology and Palaeontology.
Today's Faculty of Geosciences comprises the Department of Geology and Palaeontology, the Department of Mineralogy, the new established Chair of Early Palaeohistory, and the Chair of Physical Geography.

Teaching Staff and Students

The Faculty's teaching staff consists of twenty-nine professors and twenty-six research assistants. In the winter semester 1993-94 almost 1,200 students were majoring in Geoscience studies. Another 450 students were minoring in Geoscience studies.

Curricula and Degrees

The Faculty of Geosciences offers the following curricula and degrees:
The Doctor's degree (Dr. rer. nat.) is offered in the following fields:
Physical Geography, Geology, Palaeontology, Geophysics, Mineralogy, Palaeohistory

Research Activities

The Faculty conducts a wide variety of research activities. These range from experimental laboratory investigations to field studies. Cultural and social research studies are also conducted.
Research in Geology, Palaeontology, Mineralogy and Physical Geography is conducted in cooperation with other areas of the natural sciences. Research in Geography and Palaeohistory is conducted in cooperation with other areas of the natural and social sciences.
Applied scientific research is emphasized in all areas of the Faculty.

Research Facilities

High technology research facilities are increasingly important in the Geosciences. The Faculty has a central laboratory for Geochemistry. This laboratory is used by all members of the Faculty. Modern facilities for analytical and experimental research are also available in the Institute of Geology and Palaeontology and in the Institute of Mineralogy.

Geoscience Collections

Of special interest are the Faculty's geoscience collections. The palaeontological collection of the Institute of Geology and Palaeontology is the largest of any German university. The Department of Mineralogy contains a large collection of minerals, rocks and meteorites. The Section of Early Palaeohistory and Quaternary Ecology contains a large collection of prehistoric finds.
The Department of Geography has an outstanding collection of maps, particularly of Europe, Latin America and the Middle East.
